Self Help Hypnosis
People have been turning to self help hypnosis for years as a tool to use in their quest to stop smoking, lose weight or achieve other goals. While not a quick fix cure all or a magic solution, hypnosis can be, for many, a valuable tool in their self help toolbox.
Hypnosis cannot “force” anyone to do something. Instead, it works to change the very way that you think and feel about a certain action (such as smoking or drinking) or even the way participants feel about themselves. By working to change your outlook and helping to improve self-esteem, self help hypnosis can make it easier to achieve goals.
There are two ways one can go about seeking self help hypnosis. There are benefits and, perhaps, drawbacks to each, so you’ll have to make a decision which is the best choice for you.
Self Help Hypnosis by a Professional
Many people visit clinics to seek the professional help of a hypnotist. As mentioned above, this choice has its pros and cons.
Pros
- A professional with a good amount of experience will be able to help you understand the benefits and limitations of self help hypnosis
- The setting will be controlled
- He or she will be able to help you measure you success

Cons
- Treatment by a professional can be expensive, and will almost always require more than one visit
- It takes a bit of research to be sure that the professional you choose is ethical and properly licensed
- You will have to go to the office, rather than being in the privacy of your home (NOTE: some professional hypnotists do offer home visits)
Self Help Hypnosis at Home
Another method of self help hypnosis is to purchase CD’s that claim to help you hypnotize yourself and reap many of the same benefits of being hypnotized by a professional.
Pros
- Purchasing the CDs will almost always be much less expensive than repeated office visits
- Some people feel uncomfortable talking to anyone about their choice to try hypnosis, and this can be done privately in your home
Cons
- Many have reported being unable to hypnotize themselves with this method
- It may be difficult to set realistic goals without the guidance of a professional
Whichever method of self help hypnosis that you choose to try, it is important to keep the goals realistic. As mentioned above, hypnosis is not a cure all. You will not visit the hypnotist and then magically never smoke again. Instead, the hypnosis will provide you with a tool (which may be one of many) to help you make choices that are in line with your goals.
Self help hypnosis does not work for everyone, but many people report very positive results. Some find that just listening to the guided meditations on the self hypnosis CD’s to be helpful, even if they are not able to become fully hypnotized.
Others report great success after being hypnotized by a professional but, again, the results are different for everyone.
If you approach self help hypnosis with an open mind and reasonable goals, it is very likely that you will be able to find some benefit. Even though it will not cure you of all that is wrong in your life, it can help to set you on the path toward realizing some of your goals.
