Positive Self Image
You have heard the old saying “no one else can love you if you don’t love yourself.” While that saying might be corny, it also happens to be true. This extends not just to personal relationships, but to the workplace as well. There are many reasons why it is important to develop a positive self image. Here are a few examples that involve both your personal and work life.
You Have to Think You Can
Whether talking about success within your family or success at work, you must believe that you have the power to be the best wife, husband, mother, father, employee that ever lived. If not, you will be constantly second guessing you own ability to be effective at whatever it is you are trying to do.
Evaluating yourself and working to become better is one thing. Constantly feeling not good enough is another.
So You Don’t Get Stepped On
One of the hazards of not having a positive self image is that it is easy for you to get stepped on. You will be much more likely to allow people to talk down to you, and this will only further your feelings of self doubt.
You need to take control of your own self image so that you can learn to stand up for yourself. This will help you be more successful in every area of your life.

Because You Will Pass it Down
If no other reason seems compelling enough to make you try to develop a positive self image, this one should. If you have low self-esteem there is an excellent chance that you will pass that type of self image onto your children.
That’s not to say that you would do so intentionally, but your kids are always watching you. They see how you allow others to talk to you. They hear how you talk about yourself. If they don’t think that mommy or daddy likes who they are, they will wonder why they should like themselves.
Also, if you don’t think very highly of yourself you will, subconsciously, find the flaws in your children. Surely, if you are inadequate, your offspring must be inadequate as well.
As a parent, the development of a positive self image is of the utmost importance. Not just for you and the impact it has on your own life, but for the impact it will have on the next generation.
You May Be Healthier
Some studies have found that there is a link between positive self image and good health. In part, this is because people who a positive self image will tend to take better care of themselves while people who do not may adopt more of a “why bother” attitude about their health.
Of course, one way to improve your self-image is by working towards a goal of better health. Start eating better and begin an exercise routine. When you start to see improvements in the way you look and notice that you have more energy that will help you feel better about yourself.
The benefits of a positive self image are many. You cannot continue to listen to the voices that tell you that you’re not good enough. You have the power to create a positive self image. You must learn to believe in yourself and in your abilities. Then others will have no choice but to believe in them as well.
